Hope everyone in the United States is having a great holiday. Just stopping by briefly because I have to share this awesome find. There is a nice little antique mall right down the road from me. I was wasting some time yesterday and I found this tucked back in the corner of one of the booths. It’s the front page of New York’s “The World” newspaper from July 7th, 1895. The title reads “The Devil’s Latest Disguise”. At the bottom it states “To hear the outcry against bloomers from backwoods ministers, country constables and elderly spinsters it would seem Satan himself invented them”.
The picture itself has a young woman with horns growing from her head, a tail curling around the back and one cloven hoof. The ministers next to her has a copy of “Morality in Clothing” by Jay Goldbrick tucked under his arm. The local people look on in shock, I especially enjoy the boy on the right with wide eyes perhaps hinting at “lust”. Two men stand on the front porch of “Yaptown Store” starring in shock as a woman on the back left points disapprovingly from a building with a sign “Dres Makin Dun Here”.
The moment I found this I knew I had to have. Chances are it’s almost unique in the world and I absolutely love the subject matters. Just another reminder that the things we look back on as being extremely modest were shocking, startling, and caused outrage in the beginning. It was even to the point where one of the largest newspapers in the country (at the time) printed a huge story on it.

Since I haven’t officially commented yet, a big congratulations to New York! I am extremely happy for them, and hopefully the backlash and upset feeling some people have over it will fade quickly. The battle isn’t over by a long shot since this is only the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.
