Anonymous asked: Don't you think atheism is sort of a fad at the moment? I mean don't get me wrong, I've been atheist since going to Catholic school in fourth grade. I NEVER really believed. But all I keep seeing is little teenagers proclaiming, "btw I'm atheist!!!!!!!~*!*~8" out of some sort of rebellion..
Yes, I do think there are some people choosing to identify as Atheist because of a trend but I also think there are a great deal of sincere Atheists “coming out”, for lack of a better term, because of the trend. It is an unfortunate side effect of anything that has a strong surge in popularity, it will have people jumping on for what are perhaps the wrong reasons. That popularity though carries a strong amount of momentum with it and will draw out other people as well that are sincere and well thought out Atheists. Not to mention many people who turn to Atheism because of the trend may explore it further and end up as lifetime Atheists as a result.
Many people will go through different periods of life. People will often update their views for various reasons but even if it is only because of a trend people will finally know Atheism is an option. Honestly before I had started high school I had never even heard the term “Atheist” myself. I lived in a very small town and didn’t have access to more than a dial up computer running Windows 98 on it, the online Atheist community didn’t exist at that point. Perhaps just being exposed to the fact that Atheism does exist at an earlier age may have made my eventual acceptance of it that much easier.
I also think it is important that it will allow Atheism to become a subject of discussion in areas where it never was before. I’ve said in the past that I personally think “Tyler, The Creator” is a fairly disgusting individual but before him almost no one in the rap community was discussing Atheism. People never even considered the view of Atheists when it related to politics in the past. The idea of Atheist charity is becoming popular. Atheism is spreading and secularism is taking hold in all walks of life. Whether it is because of a trend or simply because of that momentum I think it is still a great thing for those of us that are firmly Atheist.
