domportera asked: How do you feel about the whole "up with god, down with the bible" belief?
Like the book “The Christian Atheist”? I think it’s ridiculous, but it is already what Christians have been doing for a very long time. A lot of Christians treat the bible like an old rule book. They’ll ignore it almost all of the time but once in a great while when they need something to back them up they’ll pull it out and point to some various passage. Otherwise they’ll already live their lives as if it doesn’t matter at all.
In some ways I think it could work in favor of the Atheist movement. Once someone strips all of the presuppositions about god away, all they’ve been taught through biblical teachings, they are free to mold “god” in to whatever they want it to be. Once they realize they’ve created their own god, will they realize that god in general is the same way? A figment of imagination designed and created by people. Doubtful, but perhaps a few might.
The bible is one of the only things religious people can even point to as justification for why they believe in god. Once they strip away the scriptures they are left with even less ground for an irrational belief. They can’t even point to a book for backing as to why they believe in an imaginary sky daddy. What reasoning do they have left? Pretty much the only one that really drives them in first place, selfish ego.
